Communion of the Saints

Many gifts have come our way at Resurrection. These "hand-me-downs" are precious and keep us in a very real Communion with the Saints who have gone before us, who have used these sacred things before us. It may be of interest to parishioners and visitors to know a bit of the history behind the various church furnishings and items used during worship.

Tall Silver Chalice and Paten

Charles Alfred Lynn was the paternal grandfather of one of our members. He immigrated to the United States from Sweden as a child and worked in the coal mines of Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania for many years. He was a devout Christian and attended a Swedish Lutheran Church and raised a family of eight children. He purchased a Communion set including the Chalice and Patten for his church, but when the town grew smaller, the church disbanded and the Communion set was returned to him.

The youngest of his children was a Minister of Music in many different churches throughout his life. He began playing the organ in church at the age of twelve, and later composed and published literally hundreds of sacred anthems for choir. It made sense that his father gave the Communion set to his son. It sat high on a bookshelf for many years. The Lynn family is thankful that the set has been returned to its proper use at Resurrection Church. Members feel a special connection to Charles Alfred Lynn, a man they never knew, when partaking of the bread and wine.
